You may ask yourself, why are there different diets for specific breeds, what makes them special? Well just like the different breeds themselves have certain characteristics, traits and unique sensitivities so do the ROYAL CANIN® breed specific diets. No two dog breeds are the same and no two foods are the same either.

Each of our breed formulas are precisely tailored to the specific traits, habits and health needs of that particular breed. We’ve obsessively studied it all. From facial and jaw structures, which influences eating behaviour, to the different energy needs. Even the shape, size and density of the kibble in each breed specific diet is as unique as the individual breed it is designed for – did you know that a team of lucky English Bulldogs trialled our kibble 40 000 times before we settled on the perfect shape? As a result, we have developed precise formulas for 18 breeds of dogs and 5 breeds of cats. If we have a breed formula, it’s because that breed requires it. Nothing will stop us from transforming your breed into the most magnificent animal it can be.

For a great example of unique breed characteristics, look no further than the smallest dog in the world, the Chihuahua. Chihuahua’s are known for being fussy and we often assume this is because they are often spoilt lap dogs, this isn’t really true though. The Chihuahua has the least number of olfactory glands (these are the glands used for smell in the nose) of all dogs, and because of this they do not smell as well as many other breeds. Remember for dogs, smell of food is much more important than the taste of the food. So because they do not smell as well they do not find food as appealing and tend to be more “fussy”. This is why the ROYAL CANIN® Chihuahua Adult and Puppy are exceptionally palatable. These diets are made more palatable in 3 ways: an adapted kibble size and shape, making it easier for these tiny dogs to be able to pick up the food and chew it, then an exclusive formula, flavours and aromatic profile to entice these dogs to want to eat.

Not to forget about our feline counterparts, the Maine Coon is the biggest cat in the world. In fact, they are known as gentle giants. They can measure almost 1 meter long (including the tail) and can be three times as heavy as an ordinary cat! Due to their large size and heavy bone structure particular attention must be given to protecting their joints, which is exactly what we do in the ROYAL CANIN® Maine Coon Kitten, Adult as well as wet food. Like large breed dogs, these cats have an extended growth period, so they only move over to an adult food at 18 months of age where other cats would move over at 1 year. With such a big body, - and personality too, - they can experience more strain on their hearts. Increased levels of taurine, EPA and DHA are included in the diet to maintain a healthy cardiac function.

A few of our breed specific diets are also available in a wet food. This is exciting because now you can feel comfortable feeding your animal a dry and wet food with all the same nutritional values and specificities instead of diluting out these effects with an alternative.
