Make a doggie bucket list this year

A new year has come and for many it is an invigorating time, where inspiration and motivation are set at an all time high. With new goals and intentions for the year it is easy to get caught up in a sense of excitement all the while forgetting your little furiend. After all dogs just want to have fun too!

So this begs the question: What can I add to my doggie bucket list? We have compiled a few great ideas that will assist you in making this year your dogs best.

1. Whisk your dog away

Our furkids should be a part of our family fun and a great way to include them is by finding accommodation that caters to their needs. This may require a bit more effort on our part but it can be rewarding and make for special memories.

There is no doubt about it, the majority of dogs love being in the car and a change of scenery can benefit your pup in so many ways. Be sure to pack in treats for your dog (and yourself!) as well as bowls, food & water, waste bags, toys and a blanket (or dog seat).

Like us, dogs need the mental, emotional and physical stimulation that a holiday can provide. A holiday will give them the opportunity to explore a new environment, breaking their usual routine of daily life, which in turn will rejuvenate them. This will make for a happy and healthy doggie!

Frequent stops for water and bathroom breaks are important in keeping your dog comfortable during your trip and also gives your pup a chance to stretch his legs. Roll those windows down and let your dog enjoy the wind in his face as you embark on a new adventure together.

2. Surf with your dog

This one is a little bit out there, but it is possible! There are even dog surfing competitions held, specifically in the USA.  Of course, getting your dog used to the idea of surfing will take a bit of training. It is essential that your dog knows basic commands such as “sit, stay” before attempting to surf with you and the water should be relatively calm. Ultimately, this can be a fun exercise for both dog and owner and allow you to connect in a deeper level.

3. Play dress up

What could be cuter than matching outfits? Whether it is in aid of a holiday, celebration or just for fun, playing dress up with your dog can certainly draw attention, as people gush over how adorable you both look. Plus, you get an added bonus of Instagram worthy shots!

4. Doga

Okay, so doga is actually yoga for your dog. You may wonder: Is that actually a real thing? And yes it is! So how does doga work? Doga encompasses meditation, stretching and gentle massage. The dog and owner work together in achieving certain poses - in some cases the owner will assist the dog to accomplish a pose or the dog assist the owner as a prop or instrument.

Doga helps you to build a stronger bond with your dog, enables you to better control the behavior of your dog, and is good for rehabilitating injured dogs.

5. Try Bikejoring

Bikejoring is riding a bicycle while a dog pulls you, it is almost like mushing. It is a great form of exercise for your dog, since it allows your dog to run at its own pace. Bikejoring works especially well if you have the type of dog that drags you around on walks, but it can have its cons too!

Dogs need to be well trained to stay on a straight path, otherwise the owner can have many accidents if the dog suddenly diverts its path. There are many training resources out there and practicing can take much time and effort but it is a great way of having fun with your dog and allows you to think as a team.

6. Plan a Photoshoot

Adorable family photos with your pooch capture memories that will last a lifetime. Get creative the next time you plan to take some photos of your dog. Use props, take action shots, selfies, or even use a GoPro harness to see the world through your dog’s eyes. Make your doggie the star of the show!
