Rufus' Advice: How to Socialise Dogs & Cats
This entry was posted on 2018-02-02
.Introducing dogs and cats can be a challenge! Even though there may not be any actual aggression between the dog and cat, there is still some tension in the air as they suss each other out for the first time. Rufus knows all too well about socialising with the cat next door. He says they have a love-hate relationship - but mostly love! Here's Rufus' advice on the best way to socialise cats and dogs.
Introductions
When introducing cats and dogs for the first time, do so in a safe and controlled environment. A tried-and-tested method is keeping your cat in a carrier and your dog on a leash, at a distance. This prevents triggers of the cat's natural instinct to run, and the dog's natural instinct to chase.
If the dog attempts to chase, block them from doing so. The goal is to desensitize the dog to the cat, and cat to the dog. Repeat this process (10 - 20 mins in length) for at least 3-10 days, or until both animals are fairly relaxed in each other's presence. In between training, Keep the pets in separate rooms.
Take it Slow
Do not rush the process. If you introduce the pets too quickly, you will increase their anxiety levels and the process will ultimately take longer. If one pet has a go at the other, intervene immediately and separate them again.
Spread the Scent
Spread the scents of both pets all around the house. Take an item, like a pillow or blanket, and rub it on the pet. Transfer the scent by rubbing the same pillow on other household items such as your couch, dining room table and chairs.
Places of Refuge
As a cat's natural reaction is to run away from a dog, ensure there are plenty of safe places for it to hide or high surfaces for it to jump onto. Some puppies may also be alarmed by a cat's presence. If your dog is skittish, ensure they too have safe places to find refuge such as a kennel.
Pets are different
When it comes to how long it should take to socialise your cat and dog, there is no right answer. Every pet is different. This means that it may take longer or shorter, depending on your cat or dog's personal characteristics. Be patient with pets that take a little longer to adjust to change, it will pay off eventually!
Keep them Happy
While your cat and dog are becoming acquainted with each other, ensure they are kept happy and stress-free by offering lots of high-quality treats and toys for good behaviour.
