Sidewalk Specials - Sterilisation Day:

Our Pet Heaven Cape Town team recently joined Sidewalk Specials for their 11th Sterilisation Drive in the De Doorns area - and what an eye-opening and fulfilling experience!

Sidewalk Specials have been around for 4 years and have been doing a world of good in our communities. They focus on rescuing dogs from abusive situations and off euthanasia lists and have a big passion for powering sterilisation drives. They have a sentiment for ensuring we reduce the mass overcrowding of animals in the township as much as possible.

We joined them for day one of a four day weekend where they worked tirelessly to assist with sterilising as many dogs and cats as humanly possible. There were various teams that set out to pick up and fetch animals needing attention and they were brought back to the teams working indoors with implementing the operations and recoveries.

Each animal brought in received a dedicated ‘Care Pack’ that included a full vet check, inoculation, sterilisation, dewormer, NexGard tick & flea treatment, antibiotics course, a Hero in my Hood education pack and a Hill’s Pet Nutrition food parcel. Some of the animals even left with a beautiful brand new collar and harness that were donated by the wonderful team at Urbanpaws.

A total of 478 'Care Packs' were reached over the four days, with the help of all the volunteers, vets and sponsors. Meaning 478 animals and their owners within the De Doorns community will no longer have to struggle with caring for unplanned puppies and kittens.

Ashleigh, one of our Pet Heaven staff members, describes her experience as eye opening and a tug at the heartstrings. “ My experience at the Sidewalk specials Steri Drive was overwhelming at first as I went in there not knowing what to expect. As the day went on and we proceeded to help so many animals, I knew this was a great initiative to be involved in and can't wait to help them in the future. My job on the day was to help the animals in recovery which consisted of cleaning their sterilization wound, covering them with a blanket and administering their NexGard tick and flea treatment as well as a dewormer. After an exhausting but fulfilling day I left knowing that 84 animals were on their road to recovery. ”
