Fruits not to feed your doggy:

Citrus fruits (oranges and grapefruit)

The stems, leaves, peels, fruit and the seeds are dangerous to dogs due to the amount of citric acid they contain. Citrus essential oils are also extremely bad for dogs. They can cause major temperament and nervous system issues. If your dog does eat citrus, small doses may present an upset stomach, while large doses may be more deadly.

Grapes and raisins

No dog should ever eat grapes despite their breed, temperament, size etc. While it is not understood what makes a grape toxic to dogs, grapes are so toxic that they can cause sudden kidney failure or kidney damage. The symptoms of ingesting grapes include: vomiting, loss of appetite, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Top tip: Ensure that you keep your doggy far away from grapes by storing them in the fridge, so the he/she doesn’t accidentally consume them!

Cherries

The fleshy part of the fruit is not dangerous to dogs; however, their small pips are dangerous as they contain cyanide, which will disrupt cellular oxygen transport, and your dog’s blood cells will not get enough oxygen. Look out for signs of cyanide poison in your pup, which include: dilated pupils, difficulty breathing and red gums.

Side note: It is interesting to note that cyanide poisoning is not only limited to cherry pips. Seeds from fruits such as, apples, pears, and peaches also contain cyanide.

Avocado’s contain Persin, a toxin which causes vomiting and diarrhoea. The flesh doesn’t contain as much Persin, but is still too much for dogs to digest. Avocado also has a high fat content, making it difficult for your doggy’s system to process.

Stone Fruits (apricots, peaches and plums)

The flesh of these fruits isn’t dangerous, but their pips can be extremely harmful to your pup. The seeds or pips can cause a major blockage in the small intestine. These pips also contain traces of cyanide, the symptoms for cyanide poisoning include: dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, seizures and red gums to name a few.

Tomatoes

The flesh of ripe tomatoes is fine for dogs, it is however their stems, leaves and unripened tomatoes that can cause gastric indigestion in your dog. It’s best to keep your herb garden closed off from your pups!

Top Tip: Most seeds and pips are poisonous for dogs, so always make sure you cut them out when feeding your dog fruit.

Always ensure that your doggy has a healthy diet. You can still buy fruits such as, apples, pineapple, watermelon, pears, banana and blueberries to eat with your best friend. Consult our safe fruit list to double check before feeding them to your pup!
