Canine Reflexology

The term reflexology refers to different reflex points within the body that correspond to specific organs. Canine reflexology is a practice that is relatively new but uses the same technique applied to humans. The technique requires you to use your thumbs, fingers and hands without using creams or oils.

  •  To increase circulation to a corresponding area apply a repeated pressure on a specific reflex point.
  •  To reduce feeling and circulation to a corresponding area apply a steady unchanged pressure on a specific reflex point.

This technique relaxes your dogs body as well as:

  • Decrease aggression
  • Decrease pain
  • Enhances blood flow
  • Decrease stress
  • Increase balance

It can even help with issues such as:

  • Stress-related issues
  • Muscle soreness
  • Arthritis
  • Constipation
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive conditions
  • Injuries

2 simple steps to preform canine reflexology:

1.     Sit with your dog while he is relaxed. He can either be sitting or lying down but must be relaxed. If your dog isn’t relaxed it will be quite hard for you to touch him. It’s best to be in an area that is free from distractions.

2.    Touch his paws gently. You can use either your thumbs or fingers to apply gentle steady repetitive pressure to one of his paws at a time. If your dog seems to be in any pain stop massaging immediately.

  • Apply this pressure to all pads of your dog’s paws and when you are finished very gently massage in-between the pads.
  • If your dog is enjoying this process you can also massage the bottom of his legs.

These are just a sample of the different reflex points you can use to help your dog lead a better life, reflexology methods can actually be administered basically everywhere on your dogs body. Furthermore these reflexology methods can help treat almost any illness.

Before preforming more advanced canine reflexology, do a bit of research on the specific reflex points you would like to use as to not harm your dog in any way. If your furry friend has been injured just make sure you take him to the vet first before trying to preform any of your own therapy.
