Besides being fun to pet and pretty to look at, our pet's skin is their largest organ, and its overall condition can tell you a lot about their health.

Skin serves an important function of the immune system. That's why the condition of our pet's skin and fur is one of our first clues that something might be wrong with them. It's the largest organ in their body and, along with their hair, makes up around 12% of their entire body weight. Their skin stores fat, water and vitamins, as well as offering vital protection against parasites and housing sensitive nerve endings.

The skin is a barrier which prevents water loss, reducing the chance of dehydration and helping regulate their body temperature. A dog's skin also secretes sebum, an oil-like substance which creates a biofilm over the surface of the skin.

This serves as an educational guide. It is important to seek the advice of a veterinarian to ensure that your pet is correctly diagnosed and treated.
