Protein quantity and source (Rating 3/5)
The main source of animal protein in this formula is meat and animal by-products. The source or type of animal used is not clear. This is usually an inferior quality ingredient compared to pure meat or meat meal and may include organs, chicken heads and feet, undeveloped eggs and intestines. The water content may be up to 80 % – once dehydrated this ingredient will weigh much less and move lower down on the ingredients list.
Carbohydrates (Rating 2.5/5)
This formula contains approximately 51% carbohydrates. This diet is a cereal based diet, which is not optimal for a meat eating animal. We prefer to see a carbohydrate content lower than 50% (preferable lower than 40%) but most cost-effective dog foods contain more than 50% carbohydrates. Rice makes up a minimum of 4 % of the formula other cereals commonly used in dog food are maize and wheat. Rice is easily digestible and a good source of energy. We prefer to see low glycaemic carbohydrates like oats. Cereal derivatives are the by-product of cereal manufacturing and may include peanut hulls, corn cobs, rice hulls, soybean hulls, brewers rice, grain fragments and powdered cellulose. It is usually of lower quality and with little nutritional value in comparison to the complete grain.
Oils and fat (Rating 2.5/5)
This product contains a minimum of 10% fat. Fat and protein are the preferred source of energy for a meat eater. In a healthy adult dog at ideal body weight we prefer to see a higher fat content. It is not clear whether this is from animal or plant origin. It is important to know the source of the oil to be able to evaluate how bio-available it is to the dog. Canola oil is a good source of omega 3 but the ALA type- dogs cannot use this efficiently. Fish oil is a better option due to its DHA and EPA content – the type of omega 3 dogs can use best.
The ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 is 5-7:1 which is in the optimal range.
Transparency of ingredient list (Rating 1/5)
