Carbohydrate content: 44 %
Top 5 ingredients:
1. Maize – Dogs are carnivores by nature and ideally you do not want a carbohydrate as the main ingredient. Although maize is not optimal for dogs with modest nutritional value, at least a whole grain was used and not a by-product. It is also stated on the bag that the maize contains GMO’s. The fourth ingredient is also a maize product called maize gluten (a maize by-product) – therefore it increases the maize content.
2. The second ingredient is ostrich meal. This is an excellent ingredient high in good proteins which dogs can easily digest. With Montego Karoo based in Graaf Reinet they are close to the ostrich industry.
3. The third ingredient is another whole grain: rice. Easily digestible and a good source of energy but with modest nutritional value for carnivores. It would be good if they can specify whether it is brown or white rice.
4. Maize gluten – as discussed in point 1.
5. We are happy to see a good quality protein “lamb meal” in spot number five. This is a meat concentrate and much higher in protein compared to the same weight of fresh lamb (due to water content).
Other ingredients
Going through the rest of the ingredient list it is good to see egg powder. Egg products are high in protein and bioavailable to dogs.
Beet pulp is a high fibre by-product of sugar beet processing. There is some controversy about the inclusion of beet pulp. Some sources state it is a cheap filler where other literature support its intestinal health and blood sugar regulation benefits. At reasonable amounts it is acceptable and in this food it is ingredient number seven, relatively low down on the list and therefore we do not object to it.
Animal fat and vegetable oil we discourage the use of generic terms like “animal” and would prefer to see specifics especially due to food allergies. Although this food contains lamb and ostrich – both novel proteins which can be advantageous in allergic dogs the “animal fat” may contain other proteins which the dog might be allergic to. We do not consider generic fat a quality ingredient due to lack of specifics. Origin can be of any mammals or any poultry.
Salt and natural flavouring appears on the ingredient list and it comes as a surprise to us. Salt is usually added to improve the taste and with ostrich and lamb meal we would expect the food to be very palatable.
Unfortunately they do not state what type of anti-oxidants was used but only states “approved anti-oxidants”. BHT and BHA are well known synthetic anti-oxidants with some controversy. Although scientific evidence are lacking there are several rumours that it can be carcinogenic at high levels. The levels used in dog food are usually low. But we prefer to see natural anti-oxidants in the food. On the website it is stated that Vitamin E and C are used as anti-oxidants therefore we will give them the benefit of the doubt. We would recommend that they print on the bag what type of anti-oxidant is used so that the consumer can make an informed decision.
They have added linseed oil to increase the Omega 3 content of the food. There is controversy around the bioavailability and nutritional value of linseed oil in dogs with some research suggesting it is off little value. We prefer a fish based omega source like fish oil. But at least they have made an effort to increase the Omega content.
It is good to see they have added glucosamine and chondroitin – there are some scientific evidence that these substances supports joint health. The exact levels which are necessary is a little vague and whether it survives the manufacturing process is debatable. (Posted on 14/07/2014)
