Good quality animal protein based formula preferred for an obligate carnivore. Very cost effective, good value for money. Introduction to cat nutrition:

Cats are obligate carnivores. Obligate means “by necessity:”Cats must eat meat to survive. Eating a diet high in meat provides some vitamins and fatty acids in their preformed state. Obligate carnivores can not make some amino acids and vitamins like omnivores and herbivores can. Some of the nutrients cats need in the preformed state:

1. Vitamin A – they can not make it from beta-carotene in the way humans or dogs can
2. They have little to no ability to make niacin from tryptophan
3. They have a high requirement for taurine which is found in animal flesh
4. They also need arginine from their diets.
5. Omega 3 type need to be EPA and DHA for optimal usage, fish sourced omega 3 is best for cats.

In short: cats need to eat meat to live

Animal protein quantity and source (Rating 5/5)

This is an animal protein based diet, with the heaviest ingredient dehydrated poultry meat. Poultry may contain chicken, duck and turkey. Low indigestible proteins selected for its very high assimilation are mainly used in Royal canine. Crude protein content 32%.

Carbohydrate percentage and type (Rating 3/5)

Moderate amount of carbohydrates included. Rice, maize and wheat make up the main source of carbohydrates. These are all high glycaemic index carbohydrates. Beet pulp is added to help regulate blood glucose control. We would prefer to see more vegetable carbohydrate inclusion like sweet potato, peas and pumpkin. Splitting of ingredients is also present which make certain ingredients appear less prevalent. When all maize products are added together it may outweigh rice as the second ingredient.

Omega 3 source and ratio (Rating 4/5)

Fish oil is used as the omega 3 source. High in DHA and EPA this is the best source of omega 3 for cats.

Transparency of ingredient list (Rating 3/5)

Most ingredients are described but we would like to see more specifics on what animal fats were used and what constitutes the animal proteins used.

Added benefits (Rating 3/5)

Hairball control.

Prebiotics and botanicals.

Other ingredients

It was not stated what anti-oxidants were used.
