Introduction to cat nutrition:
Cats are obligate carnivores. Obligate means “by necessity:”. Cats must eat meat to survive. Eating a diet high in meat provides some vitamins and fatty acids in their preformed state. Obligate carnivores can not make some amino acids and vitamins like omnivores and herbivores can. Some of the nutrients cats need in the preformed state:
1. Vitamin A – they can not make it from beta-carotene in the way humans or dogs can
2. They have little to no ability to make niacin from tryptophan
3. They have a high requirement for taurine which is found in animal flesh
4. They also need arginine from their diets.
5. Omega 3 type need to be EPA and DHA for optimal usage, fish sourced omega 3 is best for cats.
In short: cats need to eat meat to live
Ingredients list
Cereals (min 5% rice), meat and animal derivatives (min 15% chicken), cereal by-products, vegetable protein extract, fish and fish derivatives, oils and fat, natural attractant, yeast, minerals, amino acids, vitamins, glucosamine, chondroitin, and approved anti-oxidants
Animal protein quantity and source (3/5)
The main animal protein source in Montego is meat and animal derivatives containing a minimum of 15% chicken. It also contains some fish and fish derivatives. We would prefer to see more specifics on type of protein and source used. Meat and animal derivatives are usually not pure meat but the slaughterhouse by-products like organs, undeveloped eggs, chicken heads and feet and carcasses.
Carbohydrate percentage and type ( 2/5)
This is a cereal based food which is not optimal for an obligate carnivore. Most common cereals used in pet food is corn, wheat and rice. There is also splitting of cereal ingredients- when ingredients are split it may appear that a formula contain less of a specific ingredient. This food contains approximately 43.5% carbohydrates.
Omega 3 source and ratio (4/5)
Excellent omega3:6 ratio of 1:6. Cats utilize DHA and EPA best. DHA and EPA are present in fish based omega 3 whereas plant based omega 3 is mainly ALA which cats can not use properly. Unfortunately the oils and fats are not described therefore we can not conclude what the exact source of the omega 3 in this food is. This food contains some fish derived omega 3.The minimum crude fat content of 10% is relatively low compared to premium brand cat foods – we prefer to see the fat percentage of cat food at minimum of 15%.
Transparency of ingredients list (1/5)
The ingredient list is not transparent with most ingredients generic and non- descript – this makes it difficult for the pet owner to make an informed decision.
Added benefits (3/5)
Montego adult cat contains added glucosamine and chondroitin (410 mg/kg) for joint support. The do ensure sufficient taurine levels for cardiac health and eyesight. They also focus on maintaining an optimal urine pH to decrease the risk for crystaluria. Added yeast usually improves the taste of food but also contains nutrients.
Other ingredients
They use approved anti-oxidants to ensure shelve life. It is not clear if these are the synthetic on natural type. The food contains natural attractants – this term was unfamiliar to Wikipooch but after a literature search we concluded that it is a natural most likely botanical used to make food attractive to cat like catnip – we have mixed feelings about the inclusion of a natural attractant especially if taking in to consideration some cats obsession with catnip. Obesity is a major problem and health risk in pet cats and our concern is that adding an attractant may have the potential of causing a food obsession. (Posted on 14/07/2014)
